It’s crazy to think how far we’ve come since the COVID-19 lockdown. but If there’s one thing I took away from that time (and trust me, I learned a lot), in order to always make the most of the time I spend with my loved ones. This summer, that means more art projects than I’ve done since middle school and reading more books than I’ve ever been assigned to read. Let me tell you that our activities are heating up in the best possible way. Now that the weather is starting to cooperate, I can’t wait to recreate these “field days” with family and friends. bocce ball
Bocce Ball is one of the easiest and most competitive games you can play. I grew up having bocce tournaments in my grandparents’ backyard and these games are some of my fondest memories to this day. (Although I think we were more invested in what color of ball to throw than in the game itself.)
The game is played with eight large balls and a palina – a smaller ball. The goal is to get your ball to land as close to the ball as possible. While it takes a bit of skill or effort, watching your ball land next to a pallina ball and then roll 10 feet away can definitely make your blood boil! This set glows in the dark, so the fun doesn’t have to stop when the sun goes down.

Tennis is one of my favorite games and at the same time the one at which I am the worst. (But hey, that just makes it funnier!) I have vivid memories of my parents taking part in intense racquetball competitions on the beach when I was a kid and making it look so easy. I was always frustrated that I couldn’t hit the ball more than five times in a row. This is why I endorse the fact that it is indeed one of the best outdoor games for adults.
Although I’m still not sure if my family plays by the real rules, we love counting how many times we can hit a ball back and forth without it hitting the ground. This set from The Beach People is amazing and makes any gamer feel like a pro.
pickle ball
Is it just me or have you been hearing and seeing pickle ball everywhere these days? Whether it’s an outdoor doubles date or a tournament in the neighborhood, everyone raves about this game. It is similar to tennis but is played on a badminton-sized court with special paddles and a wiffle-esque ball. I’ve noticed more and more parks building pickleball fields and have even been to a few friends’ homes where they have their own in their backyards!
Four square volleyballs

Each player must do their best to throw the bean bag into the hole in the board. Scoring is simple: one point for a bag that lands anywhere on the board, one point for hanging it on a ledge, and three points for hitting it. While you can always find cornhole boards with more character, I suggest getting a simple wooden set and getting creative. I’ve seen beautiful hand-drawn family name boards and participated in a few events where everyone can sign and date the board with colored paint pens, add their handprints, and more.
Giant Jenga
You might be wondering if Jenga is really an outdoor game, but make it giant and it’s no longer safe for the kitchen table. (Just ask our executive producer Michelle About failing to break the water glass.) If you haven’t played, you basically arrange all the blocks to build a tower and take it down one by one without letting it collapse. Michelle’s advice? “Just avoid the windy area and definitely avoid all drinks outside of the crash zone.” This set from SunnyLife is adorable and would also make a great gift.
Spikeball
Spikeball is one of the best outdoor games for adults, as it can be played on the lawn, on the beach, and even in the pool. This will definitely get your heart pumping because you have to be quick on your feet to slap the ball on the trampoline in the middle of the players before it gets away from you. Backgammon
I know this isn’t your typical outdoor game, but when our contributing editor, Anne Campbell, sent me these adorable backgammon sets, I couldn’t help but add them to the mix. She recommends placing the game on a picnic table and it doubles as a pretty decoration too! This is definitely a scene I can get behind—sitting in the backyard, Flatland Calvary playing in the background, a glass of roses, and some friendly competition.

Horseshoe
No list of outdoor games for adults would be complete without horseshoes. My dad made a horseshoe hole in our backyard when I was young, and though it’s covered in grass and overrun by weeds, now I’m dying to fix it.
All you need are two stakes, two horsepower, and a lot of patience to tie the horseshoe around the stake. This traditional Texas game is a favorite of our editor, Lauren Zielinski. She points out that “It’s not actually as easy as it sounds if you’ve never played, and it brings me back nostalgia for little honky-tonks bars with free jukeboxes, open doors, and plenty of ice-cold Lonestar beer in the depths of South Texas.”

While some people may want to leave the beer pong behind in their college days, I recommend giving the game an upgrade and giving BucketBall a try. It’s basically the same game as traditional beer pong, but with bigger buckets and a tennis-sized ball. You can play with or without alcohol, but alcohol definitely makes it harder, funnier, and so… an outdoor game for adults. It takes all the fun and competitiveness of the original game but leaves out the lukewarm beer and germ-covered ping pong balls. If you have 20 trash cans lying around, feel free to make them huge and play basketball.

Although this game can be played most of the time, table tennis can definitely be considered as an outdoor game. There are plenty of tables built to withstand the weather, so why no Do you play the game abroad? As an avid golfer with three daughters who didn’t have much experience with the sport, croquet was something my dad loved to set up in the backyard and play with my sisters and me.
