Santa Clara – Central Jake Brendel He has been kicking around the NFL since 2016.

The highlight of his professional football career—up to this point, anyway—occurred Monday night at 49ers38-10 victory over Arizona Cardinals in Mexico City.

Brindel showed his athleticism with a pancake block from the Cardinals’ safety Budda Baker to enable Debo Samuel to reach the end zone on a 39-yard run in the third quarter.

Afterwards, he returned to the locker room to receive a long series of letters from family and friends.

“It was an amazing experience,” Brendel told NBC Sports Bay Area. “The whole match, the whole trip was amazing.

“A lot of friends beat me up. Obviously, my family was very proud of my performance, so it was great.”

The path to starting an NFL career was on a competing team Long and indirect to Brendelwho turned 30 on the eve of the 2022 regular season opener.

He entered the NFL in 2016 with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted junior from UCLA. Over the previous six seasons, Brendel appeared in 37 games, mostly on special teams, with the Miami Dolphin and 49ers. He also had opportunities with Denver Broncos And the Baltimore Crows But he failed to catch up.

When NFL All-Decade center Alex Mack retired in the off-season after only one year with the 49ers, the organization determined Brendel was eligible to take over.

On Monday, he displayed the athleticism and intelligence that made 49ers’ offensive line coach Chris Forster confident Brindle has what it takes.

On Samuel’s touchdown, the 49ers made the Cardinals think it was a right-side play. Samuel came from right to left and received a ball from the quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Brendle briefly tangled with Cardinal defensive tackle Tristen Hill on the line of scrimmage before sneaking down the field behind left tackle Trent Williams.

“The timing is always very critical,” Brendel said. “You have to make sure to block the first-level players. Trent did a great job with the second-level players, and I kind of stepped up and Debo used my combo to his advantage.

“[Samuel] Equip me perfectly and have Buda choose one side for me to attack, and hit the other side.”

Brendel ran 24 yards down the field, connecting first with Baker in the open field. Baker drove back 8 yards before planting him on his side as Samuel made his way into the end zone.

“Brendel had a really good idea,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said of the outfield block. “He had a feeling he was at the end of it. He had some booty on his end for quarterback, so it was a great play.”

There were a lot of different ways the game could unfold based on the Cardinals’ defense. But the script that ran was exactly how Brendel said he was prepared to develop it.

“If it’s not a high one [safety] It might be a little different, Brendel said, as it were. But with Budda being that deep third player, it just worked out for him.

“You always have to think of it as a worst-case scenario. Probably not worstbut the most challenging.

The 49ers offensive line continued its strong play Monday night. The 49ers averaged 5.7 yards per rushing attempt and didn’t allow a sack for the third time in 10 games this season. The team’s inside offensive linemen have risen to the occasion.

“We’re obviously a little more than halfway done, so we have a lot of work to do,” Brendel said. “We just have to keep getting better every week.

“We have high expectations of ourselves as a group, and we just have to make sure we live up to those expectations.”
