When Elon Musk took over Twitter, he envisioned that the Twitter DM or Direct Messaging system would be one of the best in the world. In fact, Musk planned to revamp the way direct messages work on Twitter and put it behind a paywall so that users can opt-in to a range of features.
In a recent meeting with Twitter employees, Musk emphasized the importance of Crypto DMs on TwitterAnd how a former employee, Moxie Marlinspike, wanted to work on the feature, but wasn’t really allowed to. He also said, “It must be the case that I can’t look at anyone’s DMs if someone puts a gun to my head.”
Musk also praised Moxie Marlinspike and said that Twitter will not only start with encryption, but will eventually become a better DMing platform than Signal. Musk also announced that Twitter will be partnering with Moxie Marlinspike and a few people from Signal to work on encrypted DMs.
Use the signal

Moxie Marlinspike, for those not in the know, is one of the foremost cryptographers and computer security researchers in the United States. After leaving Twitter, he co-founded Signal, an all-in-one messaging platform that makes it impossible for prying eyes to read or view messages or images exchanged between sender and receiver.
Over the years, Twitter has started and then paused the creation of encrypted DMs several times. But Musk is now determined to put encryption as a top priority of the vision he calls Twitter 2.0.
The first time around, it was Moxie Marlinspike himself who wanted to set up encryption for DMs on the platform. However, in 2013, he had to leave Twitter when the platform wouldn’t allow him to build the feature set.
In 2018, Twitter again set out to set up encryption for DMs and bought a license to use the Signal technology, but by 2019, Twitter reportedly scrapped the idea again.
American whistleblower Edward Snowden has reiterated his belief in Signal several times and said he uses it every day. Snowden has endorsed Signal since its inception and tweeted that he used Signal back in 2015
Rest assured, if fixing DMs is going to cost Musk significantly, which, from the looks of it, seems reasonable, It will put her behind a paywall. It remains to be seen if it connects to the existing Twitter Blue package, or if it will be paired with a new subscription service.
Unheard of leaks on Twitter. In 2018, Twitter revealed that unencrypted direct messages between brands and their customers had been available to some “external users” for longer than one year.
