The reinforcements to the #107 Indianapolis 500 are officially upon us.

Indy 500 qualifying format

There are 34 entrants vying for 33 pole positions in the 107th Indianapolis 500 race. Qualifying is divided into two days, with the bulk of the field set during Saturday’s seven-hour marathon session. Sunday will see sessions for the final three – and one elimination – Top 12 and Big Six shootouts for the pole. The drivers’ average speed over four laps determines their position.

First Qualification Day – Saturday 20th May
Grid points 13-30 unlocked
• After each car gets one chance in a four-lap round, they can choose one of the two lanes for subsequent attempts to improve their times. Route 1 has priority track access, but teams must lose their previous qualifying speed to enter it.

Qualification Day 2 – Sunday 21st May
Grid points 1-12 and 31-33 are unlocked
• The first hour-long session features the top 12 running cars with points decided 7-12.
• The bottom four cars get a clock to decide who will or won’t race with the points decided at 31-33.
• Finally, the top six cars will enjoy a 30-minute session to determine their pole position to sixth place.
