Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro may get faster USB-C ports than the mainstream models

Something small: Apple has already confirmed that the iPhone will ditch its Lightning connector in favor of USB-C. The first USB-C iPhones are expected next year, but according to the latest guidance from an Apple analyst, they won’t all be created equal.

In a recent post on Twitter, TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said his latest survey indicates that all new iPhones (2023) will ditch the Lightning connector and switch to USB-C. Only the two flagship models, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, will support high-speed transfers. Kuo added that the two standard iPhone 15 models will reach maximum USB 2.0 speeds.

Furthermore, Kuo said he expects the two flagships to support at least USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3.

The latest iPhones, including the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, are still limited to USB 2.0 speeds (480 Mbps) via the Lightning connector. Newer iPad Pro models support faster transfer speeds through their USB-C ports. Only recently have the latest flagship Android smartphones started switching to the faster USB-C transfer technology.

Apple is switching to USB-C for compatibility with a new version European law Require all small electronic devices to have a standard (non-proprietary) charging port by 2024.

if co True, and Apple only shipping Pro models with a faster transfer rate would create another difference between the mainstream iPhone line and the flagship one. In fact, for most users, I don’t think it will make much difference either way.

Maybe I’m an exception, but when was the last time you connected your phone to your computer to transfer data? With the proliferation of video and music services, cloud storage and wireless protocols, the need to link over a wired connection is not as important now as it was, say, a decade ago. Maybe those who shoot at ProRAW You might want to do some post-processing on a computer, but that’s the only situation that really comes to mind.
