The use of artificial intelligence or artificial intelligence in creating art can be a divisive topic. Well, we recently saw how great AI can be when implemented in the right way.
Alper Yesiltas, a lawyer and photographer based in Istanbul, Turkey, used artificial intelligence to create photorealistic portraits of some of our favorite and creative celebrities, and what they would look like today, had they not died young.
Yesiltas released a set of 10 photos as part of his project titled “As if Nothing Happened”.
Posting in a blog post, Yeseltas said:
“With the development of AI technology, I was excited for a while, believing that ‘anything imaginable can actually be shown.’ When I started tinkering with the technology, I saw what I could do and thought about what would make me the happiest. I wanted to see some of the people I had missed again in front of me. And so this project came into being.”
“The hardest part of the creative process for me is making the photo look ‘real’ to me. The moments I love the most are when I think the photo in front of me looks so realistic as if it was taken by the photographer.”
“I use different software. The time it takes to create a complete full image varies, but I can say it takes a while for the image to look ‘real’ to me.”
Both celebrities who appeared on the project died at a young age – often in tragic and sometimes mysterious circumstances.
Princess Diana was killed in Paris at the age of 36 after the Mercedes-Benz in which she was traveling crashed while being chased by paparazzi in the early hours of August 31, 1997.
Kurt Cobain was found dead on April 5, 1994 at his Seattle home after being shot in the head. He was 27 years old when he died.
Jimi Hendrix died of a drug overdose on September 18, 1970. He also died at the age of 27.
The Beatles singer John Lennon was fatally shot in New York City on December 8, 1980 at the age of 40.
Freddie Mercury died of bronchial pneumonia caused by AIDS on November 24, 1991 at his home in London at the age of 45.
Michael Jackson, who began changing his appearance in significant ways in the mid-1980s, died of acute propofol and benzodiazepine poisoning at his Los Angeles home on June 25, 2009, at the age of 50.
Elvis Presley, who had heart problems and diabetes, died on August 16, 1977 at the age of 42.
Tupac Shakur was killed when he was 25 years old, in Las Vegas by a gang in a speeding car shooting, on September 13, 1996.
Actor Heath Ledger died of a drug overdose on January 22, 2008 at the age of 28.
Bruce Lee died on July 20, 1973, at the age of 32, in a strange accident caused by taking the wrong medications for a series of seizures and headaches. It is believed that his medication was switched or that he was given the wrong medication.
Yeseltas wants to extend the project “as if nothing happened”, but in a very selective way, so the process is a bit slow for me. He also intends to continue using the same AI robot he developed, and comes up with images for projects such as “Life in 2050” and “Alternate Museum”.
