Barcelona achieve incredible victories in Liga F

Barcelona won 7-0 against Levante Las Planas in La Liga on Wednesday night.

The result itself is rather unremarkable given Barcelona’s absolute dominance of Spanish football in recent seasons – keep in mind that this team achieved a cumulative goal difference of +300 in the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons.

But this game was special because of what it represented in a broader context.

It wasn’t just a win, it was a 50th consecutive league win.

Not since June 2021 when Atletico Madrid, champions of Spain three times in a row in the not-too-distant past, won in a seven-goal thriller, with Barcelona taking less than three points from a domestic league match.

Even for a team as dominant as they are, this is a truly amazing feat.

After losing to Atl├ętico, Barcelona went on to win their last five league matches in the 2020/21 season. Then the 2021/22 campaign saw 30 consecutive victories, a flawless season with a maximum score of 90 points. Another 15 rebound victories to start 2022/23 make it 50 wins in a row in Liga F.

It is worth noting that this season’s efforts were without back-to-back Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Potellas as a result of her exit from the AFC Champions League, while striker Jenny Hermory left the club last summer.

However, Barcelona stayed as strong as ever in domestic circles. The goals for their 50th consecutive league win came from usual sources, with Asisat Oshoala scoring a hat-trick while Ana Maria Krnogorcevic and Mariona Caldente were shining. There was also a target from the 16-year-old talent Vicki Lopez, who played. Only a handful of first team matches.

Coach Jonathan Giraldez also managed to comfort such star names as Aitana Bonmati and Lucy Bronze from the start, while there was also Kyra Walsh, the most expensive player in the world.

Although another Liga F title already seems in the bag, Barca’s hopes of a fourth consecutive domestic double hang in the balance after being kicked out of the Copa de la Reina this season for fielding an ineligible player – Geyse played against Osasuna in the round of 16. When you should have been suspended. And while the appeal is being made, reversal seems unlikely.
