Bill Russell’s freshman card is selling for $660,000 at auction, the third most expensive vintage basketball card ever

A 1957 rookie card of the late great Bill Russell sold for $660,000 at auction Thursday, according to The Guardian. PWCC Marketplace.

The Russell Card went on to be the third-highest money of all-time among pre-1980 vintage basketball, according to Card Ladder via ESPN. The other cards are the 1948 Bowman George Mikan Junior Card, which sold for $800,000 in March 2022 and the 1961 Wilt Chamberlain Junior Flair Card, which sold for $670,000 last June.

Russell He passed away on July 31, 2022, at the age of 88. He is perhaps the greatest basketball player of all time after winning 11 NBA Championships, five Players of the Game, an Olympic gold medal, and 12 All-Star appearances during his 13 seasons with the Boston Celtics from 1956-1969. Russell coached the Celtics for the last three years of his career – becoming the first black coach in NBA history.

His number 6 jersey was retired by the League After his death.

Russell He auctioned most of his NBA memorabilia in 2021which included trophies, rings, basketballs, jerseys, letters, and photos from his time in the league. The collection was sold for about $9 million. per ESPNRussell donated a portion of the proceeds to two nonprofit organizations in Boston: Guideco-founded by Russell, and the Boston Celtics United for Social Justice.
