In Christian Romero’s view, Liverpool giants Virgil van Dijk and new Manchester United star Lisandro Martinez are the two best defenders in the Premier League.
Romero himself joined the division last season, where he played on loan to Tottenham before being signed permanently this summer. He impressed at the time, becoming one of Antonio Conte’s most important players, establishing himself as a key player with Argentina in the process.
He plays alongside Martinez in his national team, and rates the new Manchester United signing highly, saying that alongside Van Dyck He is the best defender in England.
“Today my best defender is always Virgil van Dijk and Lisandro Martinez from Manchester United,” Romero said. Sky Sports. “For me, they are the best in the Premier League.”
When he was playing in Italy before joining Tottenham, Romero played in the middle of three defenses in the vast majority of matches. In England, Conte deployed him to the right side of his three-man defense.
The 24-year-old admits it’s been tough to adapt to, but says playing on the right alongside Martinez for Argentina helped him do just that.
“It’s very different,” he said. “My favorite position is the middle, because that’s where I’ve always played, but I play on the right also for the national team now and I’ll happily play wherever I’m asked, so I don’t have a problem with he-she.
“In the beginning, it was definitely difficult, but I got used to it and learned the role. I have to keep learning and keep correcting many things, but I’m good and I feel good there.”
