Enzo Fernandes made his full debut for Chelsea

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandes received his debut in the west London derby against Fulham at Stamford Bridge, less than three days after becoming the most expensive player in British football history earlier in the week.

Jorginho, who has been assigned the fifth shirt at Chelsea, completed a £107m transfer from Benfica in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The 22-year-old had a few months that included moving from River Plate to Europe, winning the World Cup with Argentina and being named Young Player of the Tournament.

Rather than being left out of the spotlight while he settled in, Fernandes was thrown straight into the deep end, lined up at midfield alongside Conor Gallagher and Mason Mount.

Speaking in the aftermath of the transfer, Chelsea boss Graham Potter expressed doubts whether all the paperwork would be in place for Fernandes to play soon. But that was clearly not a problem once Fernandes was selected in the starting line-up.

Fernandes said of his transfer: “I am grateful to Chelsea and its ownership for doing everything they can to make me part of this project.”

“I am happy and excited to be joining Pride of London, playing in the best league in the world and competing for the biggest honours. I can’t wait to play in front of our fans and help my colleagues on and off the field.”

The Fulham game also marks the first start for Chelsea for £89m winger Michailo Modric, who made his debut off the bench in the 35th minute against Liverpool earlier this month.

Hakim Ziyech has also had an odd start, despite being on the brink of joining Paris Saint-Germain on a transfer-determined day and You still have permission to explore an exit.
