Facebook removes controversial information fields from profiles, including political and religious opinions

Briefly: Meta in an effort to make Facebook easier to navigate, and use will remove several fields from user profiles starting next month. Starting December 1, Facebook profiles will no longer highlight a user’s religious views, political opinions, sexual orientation (“interested in”) and addresses.

In an email to the technology site confirming the pending changes, a Facebook spokesperson said they are sending notifications to users whose fields have been filled out. The Facebook representative also noted that there is nothing to prevent a user from sharing information about these fields elsewhere on the platform.

Changes are a sign of the times and may be long overdue. When the social network launched in the mid-2000s, online privacy wasn’t as big of a concern as it is today. The internet in general was much more intimidating at the time as well, as online bullying and harassment had not yet matured to modern levels.

Other popular social platforms including TikTok and Instagram allow users to share some details about themselves but the details are not overly specific.

It’s been hard going Meta lately. Having reached over $378 in September 2021, the company’s shares are currently trading up more than 70 percent at $111.12 as of this writing.

Just last week, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company would part ways with about 13 percent of its workforce, or about 11,000 employees, in an effort to become leaner and more efficient. Zuckerberg said Meta will also extend a hiring freeze through the first quarter of the fiscal year and shrink discretionary spending.
