As a result, the automaker has also issued a sales moratorium on the new electric vehicle until all stock vehicles can be inspected and, if necessary, repaired. The summon affects a total of 1063 Arias.

The problem arose once electric cars were imported into the United States from Japan. These cars required some quality control work to be carried out in port once they arrived, work which necessitated the removal of the steering wheels. But in some cases, the bolt holding the steering wheel in place may not have been torqued properly.

Nissan was first alerted to the problem at the end of January, when someone working at a dealership noticed a loose steering wheel on the Ariya. Just over a week later, a second agency reported something similar, and upon investigation, Nissan discovered that the steering wheel bolt was missing in this case. Nissan says both cars were serviced by the same technician at the port.

Inspections of other Ariyas in stock at Nissan dealerships revealed yet another vehicle with a loose steering wheel – this time with a set bolt but improperly installed.

Nissan is reaching out to Ariya owners this month to arrange inspections of their electric vehicles and, if necessary, a steering wheel bolt replacement. It says that owners may notice excessive play or wheel looseness if their car has been affected.
