It seems that Elon Musk recognizes the game when he sees it. While Musk may come off as a brash troll at times, the CEO of Tesla and Twitter certainly respect technical skills and people who show their technical prowess and know what they’re doing.

Elon Musk has hired George Hotez, a prominent engineer who made a name for himself for being one of the first people to hack the iPhone. Hotz is a high-profile security hacker who in the past turned down a job at Tesla to work on its driver assistance technology.

One of the issues Musk found with Twitter was how the platform’s contrasting search options worked. This is a sentiment shared by many programmers, including Hotz. Hotez then suggested what he would do to remedy this and solve the search problem users were having with Twitter.

Hotz even offered to join Twitter as an intern under Musk, which Musk accepted.

The training came after Hotz expressed support for Musk’s “very hardline” ultimatum to Twitter employees, which required them to work “long hours at high intensity” or leave the company. Hotez said that “this is the position that builds incredible things” and that he is willing to do an internship at the company. Musk’s response was: “Sure, let’s talk.”

Aside from the iPhone hack and subsequent battle with Apple, Hotz gained notoriety for founding, an advanced driver assistance company that creates autonomous driving solutions that can be modified into older cars as well. At the time, Tesla said of Hotz’s ideas for autonomous driving that “it is highly unlikely that one person or even a small company that lacks the ability to validate large-scale engineering can produce an autonomous driving system that can be deployed in production vehicles.”

Apparently, Tesla had earlier offered to hire Hotz before he founded to work on self-driving Tesla. However, he declined the offer because Musk, according to Hotz, kept changing the deal. When Hotz rejected Tesla’s final offer, he famously told Musk: “I appreciate the offer, but like I said, I’m not looking for a job. I’ll reach out to you when I crush Mobileye.” At the time, Mobileye was the company providing some of the technology that Tesla uses in its Autopilot system.

In exchange for fixing Twitter’s search function, Hotz is just seeking to cover his living expenses in San Francisco. Hotz’s training comes at a time when Musk Urgently looking for engineers who can write software or code.

Musk is also looking for engineers with experience in other areas as well as sales representatives for his advertising sales team.
