France striker Karim Benzema returned to training on Saturday but had to leave the session with an injury and is now expected to miss the entire World Cup finals.
Benzema had been struggling for fitness all season and was forced to miss all of Real Madrid’s last five matches in all competitions before the World Cup break.
The 34-year-old returned to training on Saturday alongside former club team mate Raphael Varane, who has not played since October due to an injury sustained while playing for Manchester United.
RMC I mentioned at the beginning that Benzema was unable to finish the session – his first since arriving in Qatar. He was due to undergo tests later in the evening to assess the damage, with the same publication later revealing that the World Cup Ballon d’Or winner’s dream had come to an end.

France could still call up a replacement to join the squad by Monday, the day before their clash with Australia. Didier Deschamps named just 25 players in his original squad for the tournament, opting not to fill the maximum 26-man quota allowed by FIFA until he later added Marcus Thuram.
The defending champions were already missing Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante from the group due to injury, while Presnell Kimpembe and Christopher Nkunku have had to withdraw since the squad was announced.
