France was hit hard before the World Cup

France could still call up a replacement to join the squad by Monday, the day before their clash with Australia. Didier Deschamps named just 25 players in his original squad for the tournament, opting not to fill the maximum 26-man quota allowed by FIFA until he later added Marcus Thuram.

The defending champions were already missing Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante from the group due to injury, while Presnell Kimpembe and Christopher Nkunku have had to withdraw since the squad was announced.
