Fujitsu’s new optical system can transmit data at a speed of 1.2 Tbps per wave

Something to look forward to: Fujitsu has developed optical transmission technology capable of delivering up to 1.2 terabytes per second per optical wave, or the equivalent of six Blu-ray Discs (25 gigabytes) per second. The new technology is outperforming traditional optical network solutions almost everywhere.

It uses LSI digital signal processing (DSP) technology based on the latest semiconductor process and is one-third smaller and lighter than conventional air-cooled equipment. Energy consumption has also been reduced to 120 megawatts per transmission capacity (Gigabits per second), and CO2 emissions have been reduced by 70 percent compared to conventional transmission systems.

With the spread of 5G networks, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and big data, the need for faster and faster data transmission technology will increase. 5G hasn’t been as successful as some expected, but it’s here, and its successor – 6G – is already in development.

Unlike conventional air-cooled optical transmission equipment, Fujitsu’s system is liquid-cooled. It is a trend that is becoming increasingly common as companies struggle to manage the massive amount of data that the data community generates on a daily basis.

Redmond said the setup, which consists of devices immersed in a non-conductive liquid that boils at 122 degrees Fahrenheit inside a steel tank, could reduce a server’s power consumption by up to 15 percent.

Fujitsu It also uses machine learning to analyze the state of individual components such as optical fibers with a high degree of accuracy. This data can then be used to specify the DSP modulation method and configuration elements when building the network to maximize transmission performance while reducing power consumption.

The company said that when operating a device using the technology with a transmission capacity of up to 800 gigabits per second, it can achieve four times the reach compared to a conventional system.

Fujitsu plans to commercialize the technology-based equipment in the first half of fiscal year 2023.
