South Korean blockchain game studio Wemade has announced that it is investing in esports company DRX. The game developer will join League of Legends World Champion, DRX, to lead the esports organization’s fan culture.

Wemade aims to integrate DRX’s fan culture into its blockchain gaming platform, WEMIX. This is part of an effort to broaden its reach and introduce Web3 to fans of the organization. DRX is one of the world’s leading esports teams, with over 3.7 million fans. A strategic investment could consolidate a large part of the fan base of Wemade’s blockchain gaming platform.

Linking esports to Web3

Since moving to Web3 games in 2018, Wemade has been actively expanding its ecosystem. They have introduced new games to the blockchain gaming platform, WEMIX PLAY. Today, the Korean blockchain gaming ecosystem is hosting exciting play to earn (P2E) titles, including Ocean Tales 2, Gold Club, and Abyssrium Gold.

Recently, Wemade has secured more than $46 million from Tech Giant Microsoft (NASDAQ :), along with Shinhan Asset Management and Kiwoom Securities. While it is not specified why Microsoft is investing in the Korean game developer, Wemade has been dedicated to its roadmap, innovation and construction in the space.

Wemade is testing the waters in the esports scene in light of its expanding ecosystem. Esports has become a major part of Korean culture as the country sponsors some of the best players in the world.

Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok, Lee “Rogue” Yeol, Heo “Showmaker” Su, and Kim “Doinb” Tae-sang are some of the biggest names that the Korean esports scene has produced. Faker and Rogue are two of the best players ever in League of Legends and Starcraft, respectively.

Esports in Korea is serious business, as the country is filled with internet cafes called PC bangers. Unsurprisingly, some of the best gamers in the world got their start in these cybercafés.

Today, esports is a hub for crypto partnerships, with competitors like Team SoloMid (TSM) previously teaming up with FTX. Considering Korea’s ornate and well-established esports culture, Wemade’s collaboration with DRX is a step in the right direction.

DRX undoubtedly has some of the best upcoming teams in the world right now. In League of Legends, they against all odds by defeating Korean champion Gen. G and favorite T1 to claim the title. Their Valorant team has a record of 103 wins and four draws since their debut and they now have a total of 22 championships.

Wemade’s integration of DRX’s fan culture into the Web3 ecosystem is a huge step for both the company and the game developer.

Henry Zhang, CEO of Wemade, shared, “Esports is well suited for blockchain as it develops futuristically through frequent technical innovations.” Zhang added, “Through NILE, WEMIX’s DAO & NFT platform, we will complement the digital economy that connects gaming, entertainment, sports, art, and finance.”

on the flip side

  • It is not specified what will be invested in Wemade. Neither the game studio nor the esports team have shared anything substantial about their collaboration.
  • The relationship of crypto and esports may also have been affected by the FTX infection. TSM, one of the largest esports organizations, has suspended its 10-year, $210 million naming rights contract with FTX.

Why should you bother

Esports is undoubtedly an important part of traditional gaming. The esports industry has one of the most passionate fan bases in the world. Partnerships like these can build and deliver the Web3 infrastructure for the next generation of users. Esports titles like League of Legends, Apex Legends, Call of Duty, and Valorant are some of the most played games internationally. Millions of users watch these games every day, following individual streamers, teams, and more. Teaming up with one of the decorated teams in the esports scene will greatly help put Wemade on the map.
