Gareth Southgate has no plans to part with Harry Maguire and is willing to share his reputation at the center of defence.
Maguire has lost his place in Manchester United’s starting line-up this season, with Eric ten Hag favoring Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane over the captain.
This led many to believe his place in England The team was in danger before the World Cup, but that does not appear to be the case.
He has been one of Southgate’s most used players since the former England international took charge, and speaking to the press, the manager said he still believed the Manchester United A man deserves to start for him and is willing to risk his reputation for it.
“It’s clearly not the ideal situation,” he said.
“We’re only a few weeks into pre-season, so, physically, if they have a few 90 minutes, that’s okay. Another seven to eight weeks, that starts to get more complicated.
“But he is an important player for us and it is important to support our best players. Whatever my reputation, I put it there.
“He and John are our dominant air defense heart [Stones] Incredible with the ball. The amount of pressure they put on the team in tournaments because we don’t always have a pivotal midfielder who can go up the game – it means there’s a lot of pressure on the central defender to use the ball well and those. Two are as good as any player in world football at doing that.”
