Looking forward: Being able to receive help from a talking car has been a popular fantasy since Knight Rider aired on TV. Newer AI models like OpenAI may bring auto manufacturers and technology companies closer than ever to that dream.
General Motors recently He said It is developing an in-car AI assistant based on Microsoft’s Azure cloud service and OpenAI, according to Semafor. The company compares its goal to generative AI such as ChatGPT and Bing AI but stresses that its model will work differently.
The company wants to provide an assistant that can provide drivers with important information about their cars in a conversational way, bypassing simple in-car voice commands. Similar to the way ChatGPT and Bing Chat pull information from the Internet, GM Assistant can grab information from a vehicle’s instruction manual to save drivers the trouble of flipping through it.
If the user asks the GM assistant how to change a flat tire, he can show a video tutorial about the process. If the maintenance light comes on, the assistant can tell drivers its meaning and urgency. Users can also ask the assistant to automatically program the garage door code. In theory, it can automatically arrange repair or inspection appointments as you schedule them in the calendar.
ChatGPT and Bing Chat have become controversial because they are often incorrect and sometimes strange responses for user inquiries. GM wants to avoid this problem by developing a different software layer on top of the OpenAI models, which are specifically optimized for the automotive experience. However, GM has not provided details of the models it uses and does not yet have the name of its associate.
This endeavor is possible mainly because of the company’s partnership with Microsoft, which is I started To develop self-driving vehicles. GM has not said whether the AI assistant could integrate with self-driving functions.
Along with other automakers, GM may be in the running to develop OpenAI-powered in-car assistants before Apple and Google bring them to users’ smartphones.
Google is currently using the OpenAI model for its search engine optimization. Theoretically, this work could be applied to an AI assistant for Android and Android Auto. If Apple integrates the technology with Siri, it could bring assistant functionality to CarPlay, or Apple Car if it comes to fruition.
