In a big boost for Make in India, India’s Communications and Information Technology Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has announced that India is poised to acquire the largest Apple manufacturing plant at Hosur in Bengaluru. The Hosur iPhone manufacturing unit will employ around 60,000 people.

Tata will operate the Hosur iPhone factory to produce more than 60,000 people, including at least 6,000 women from the tribal areas.

Apple outsourced the manufacturing iPhone enclosures for Tata Electronics, which has a plant in Hosur. While speaking at the Janjatiya Gaurav Divas, Vaishnau said 6,000 tribal women residing near Ranchi and Hazaribagh have been trained to make iPhones, according to a PTI report.

Foxconn’s decision indicates a production adjustment as it faces production disruptions in China. The iPhone supplier has made headlines in recent weeks, with stringent virus restrictions at its factory in Zhengzhou, the world’s largest iPhone factory, disrupting production and raising concerns about the impact of Chinese virus policy on global supply chains.

Videos have surfaced on Chinese social media showing several Chinese migrant workers climbing a fence outside the Foxconn factory, which makes Apple iPhones. Meanwhile, Apple has added a new display supplier for the new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max along with the old panel supplier Samsung. The supplier of the new display for the iPhone 14 Pro models is the South Korean technology leader LG. Earlier, South Korean tech giant Samsung was the exclusive supplier of displays for these models, but now LG has split display orders for the new iPhone 14 Pro models, according to a recent report by Korean publication ETNews.
