The Detroit Red Wings Plan to carry three goalkeepers, and take advantage of having space in the roster and cover to do so.
Hilberg was with the Wings at the end of last season to provide depth, and that’s apparently what GM Steve Yzerman has in mind again.
“Steve called me today,” Coach Derek Lalonde said after Wednesday’s victory at Little Caesars Arena. “That was news to me. It wasn’t something we talked about as a group.
His exact words were, We’ve got a lot of hockey coming up. We have a place on the roster. I think it gives us another option if a goalkeeper goes down here. I don’t follow GR as closely as I probably should, but I think we’d like another option if something goes wrong. With our two best guys. Those exact words were Steve’s.”
Hellberg, 31, played in the Wings’ season finale, stopping 20 of 23 shots in the win. He started that season with the Kraken, and was waived and claimed by the Ottawa Senators, where he played 1 game (2.00 goals against an average of 0.935 save percentage) before being returned to waivers, where he was claimed by the Kraken.
While Husso was outstanding (2.36 goals-against average, 0.922 save percentage), Alex Nedeljkovic (4.33, . 873) struggled. Goalkeepers with the Grand Rapids Griffins have fallen on hard times as well, with Victor Brattstrom posting a 4.05 GAA and . 874 save percentage in eight games and Jussi Olkinuora 4.21 GAA and . 858 save percentage, also in eight games.
