How did Harry Kane become the best goalscorer in England’s history?

[ad_1]

There was a potential for history-making when England began their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign. And it was.

Harry Kane has had more than his fair share of pundits over the years, but his penalty kick against Italy on Thursday night put him ahead of all other players to become the Three Lions’ top scorer.

The Tottenham forward was level with Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney heading into the international break, but now stands alone as the top scorer.

Here’s how the England captain hit the milestone.

Kane is now ahead of Rooney’s 53-goal haul with 54 following a penalty against Italy. It’s another CV record, having recently become Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer.

The captain of the Three Lions has scored 53 goals in 80 matches, which is 40 fewer than Rooney. Logic suggests that Kane is willing to set a record that will take many years to break, if it is broken at all.

Given that he is 29 years old and the focal point of England A team, that could get ahead of all the competition over the next four or five years.

Kane made his debut for the England senior team in March 2015 when Roy Hodgson was in charge. By some standards, Kane was 21 years and seven months old when he scored on his debut as a substitute against Lithuania in a European qualifier.

He scored a header 79 seconds after entering.

It still took another two years before Kane became so prolific for England. He still occasionally featured for the under-21 side but managed to score two more goals in 2015, one against San Marino and one against Switzerland.

After starting to score goals almost every time he played for England, Gareth Southgate made him England captain in May 2018, leading up to the World Cup in Russia. He responded by scoring six goals and winning the tournament’s Golden Boot.

Since then, he has undoubtedly been the mascot of the England team. He hit 16 goals for England in 2021, the most in a calendar year for a single player with the Three Lions. When he scored two goals in the 2022 World Cup, he was overtaken by Gary Lineker in the major slams.

It was a delight for many fans, in particular spurs fans, to watch Kane climb his way up the scoring charts for England and one of the standout moments was when he scored 41, putting him above Michael Owen. This happened during his hat-trick against Albania during the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

After overtaking Jimmy Greaves and Vivian Woodward, Lineker – sitting 49th – had him in his sights. It happened towards the end of a friendly against Switzerland in March 2022, while that game also brought him equal to Sir Bobby Charlton before he bested the Man United great by scoring against Germany in the Nations League.

Another goal against Germany and then his World Cup exploits against Senegal and France put him level with Wayne Rooney, with nothing apparently getting in his way.
