How I organize my morning routine – and why it’s the most powerful part of my day


A splash of cold water on my face lifts me from the calmness of sleep. My coffee maker springs to life, and the first rays of morning light peek out into the hills outside my window. These are the circadian rhythms of my morning, bringing calm and comfort in repeating them no matter what the next day has in store. I first started building a morning routine in college—finding solace in creating structure during such a transitional season. I believe this was my first step towards actively seeking wellness in my life, and over the years, my morning routine has become the heart of my journey toward personal growth.

Productivity versus prioritization

When asked some form of the question, “How do you get everything done in one day?” My answer is – I don’t! I’m a mom, I run two businesses, and like most of you, I’m a snob Much. Since we all know our best intentions can be sidelined by factors beyond our control (the meeting ended, the school nurse called—your kid is sick, errands took twice as long as expected), early morning is the best time to be really clear about what we’ll prioritize that day. It sounds simple, but I truly believe this is key in designing your dream life.

Since I love getting inspired by other people’s morning routines, I thought it might be helpful to share what I have. Here is how to play:

6:00 a.m.: Skincare

6:10 am – coffee

I head to the kitchen and turn on the coffee maker (I always make it the night before). While it brews, I feed our cat Clem, and set up my cozy living room spot with my iPad for journaling, headphones, and whatever book I’m reading. I catch me mug ritual And feel good – this is my favorite part of the day.

6:20 a.m. – Meditate, journal, read

I turn on my air capsules and do a quick meditation or mindfulness app to get into the zone – lately I’ve been listening to “Get Energy” from Superhuman appthen switch to soft music and start journaling.

Hey guys, I’m obsessed with my new journaling style. Adam surprised me with an iPad Pro for Christmas, and it’s a game changer because I can combine handwriting and writing. I use the Evernote application So that everything is searchable (yes, even my handwriting) since I often go back and check my journal for newsletter ideas or quotes I’ve jotted down.

My diary is a mixture of creative freewriting, prayer, and jotting down things from the day before so I want to remember them later. If I’m on writer’s block, I just put the Pencil on the iPad and start writing—Any thingeven if it doesn’t make sense, it always brings up something I want to delve into.

I also use this time to read something inspiring, which helps me have a positive void for the day and anchors what’s important. At the moment, I am reading excerpts from the book, May the space between us be blessedand I always write a single or quick quote to help synthesize what I’ve read.

6:40 a.m. — Review my goals

6:50 a.m. — Align my calendar

This step only takes a few minutes, but it has the potential to have the strongest effect on the rest of my day.

Since the way we spend our time is a direct expression of what is most important to us, isn’t it worth it to be mindful of how we allocate our precious hours the next day?

After reviewing my goals, it was time to check if my calendar was consistent and balanced. I can make sure it’s not too heavy towards one area of ​​life (eg career) while sacrificing all others (eg health or family.) For example, if one of my goals is to be a better listener with my kids, look anywhere in My calendar for the day I can carve out a few minutes of time for a non-distracting conversation. If I’m committed to doing Pilates twice a week, I can see if it’s on my calendar — and if not, find a place for it! Yes, you may have to cancel or move something else on your calendar to make room for these priorities. Saying “no” to some things so you can say “yes” to others is part of the process.

Life is very busy, and for me, I have to be very adamant about making time for the important things or my schedule will easily crowd them out.

6:55 a.m. – Set priorities for the day

And the last step of my morning routine is blogging The three most important tasks I have to accomplish that day. It can be work-related or personal, it just needs to align with my overall goals so I can make sure I’m always making progress.

Usually, I write these down in my journal and then also keep a pad of paper on my desk where I will jot them down so I can see them easily throughout my work day.

You know those days when you feel like you’re just spinning your wheels and jumping from one thing to another, but it seems like you have nothing to show for it? Even on days like these, if I accomplish my first three priorities, I can end the day knowing that even if I don’t get everything I’m done, I still get as many as I can Important Things done.

7:00 a.m. – family time

It’s time to get the kids active, and the mad dash begins to get everyone dressed, fed, and out the school door. One of the great things about getting up before everyone else is that I can laser focus on the morning routine I outlined above. Then when my kids wake up, I can fully focus on my time with them.

Which brings me to the next most important thing in my morning routine:

Create good habits, but don’t stick to them too hard. Sometimes life gets in the way, and it’s better to roll with it than to fight back.

When Henry was younger, he would get up at 5 in the morning and wanted my attention first, so he often started my morning routine with reading or playing with him. No, a chutes and ladders ride isn’t how I would have chosen to start my day (especially at 5am), but I’ve learned to enjoy those good times and remember – it’s a season, and it won’t last forever.
