Slow down Kobe Brown

Another game with Missouri means another showdown with Kobe Brown.

The Tigers’ guard/forward served as one of the team’s most reliable scoring options in 2022, leading Missouri in scoring with 15.7 points per game. In conference play, the senior has found another level averaging over 18 points per game which includes a 30-point performance against Kentucky.

It’s a level Alabama fans have grown accustomed to during his tenure with the Tigers. Last season, Brown set Alabama on fire at Mizzou Arena, tallying 30 points, 10 of which came from free throws and 13 rebounds en route to Missouri’s 92-86 upset victory.

“I wasn’t here when he was drafted out of high school, so I take no responsibility for him not being drafted,” Oates said. “Maybe you can put that outside so he doesn’t handle it with me. I’d love to have him on that team. You can tell how great he is.”

“He shoots the three pointers really well, he’s big and strong and when he gets to the edge he’s done. He’s really one of those guys. He gets better every year as if he hits the ball better than when he came in. There are so many holes in his game.”

Another trip to Mizzou Arena

After defeating the Devils at Memorial Stadium in Nashville, Alabama faces another grueling road test when it travels to Columbia on Saturday.

Despite beating #1 Houston on the road and then North Carolina in the Phil Knight Invitational, Oats is still looking for his first win in Missouri since arriving in Tuscaloosa.

“The year we went 16-2, we went up there and were flat,” Oates said. “Last year, Charles (Bediaco) didn’t have an actual match. We turned to the area, and they didn’t work out well for us. They introduce matchmaking issues. This year, again. Brown is an Alabama kid who’s in Missouri. He always seems ready. for our game. It’s a mismatch problem.”

No matter how the two teams perform, Missouri continues to get the better of Alabama as the Oats are 0-3 on trips to Mizzou Arena. Since the Tigers joined the conference, the series has been largely dominated by the home team with the hosts holding an 11-3 record. For Chauvin, his message was simple, Alabama needs to repeat his performance on Tuesday.

“We’re just going to have to change the narrative about Missouri, to be honest with you,” Oates said. “We’ll just have to go out and play hard, the first four minutes should be really good.”

Welch continues to work through the struggles

Dom Welch’s move to Tuscaloosa did not go as smoothly as any Crimson Tide member could have hoped.

After battling a nagging calf injury, Welch struggled to find his rhythm as he shot 1-for-13 from deep. While the low percentage is shocking, it is compounded by the fact that Welch currently ranks third in St. Boniventura program history with 257 triple-a-points. He also sports a 37.4 career average from behind the arc.

“It’s really hard to get into every game and be 1-on-2,” Oates said. “It’s easy to go 0 for 2. If he’s getting eight tries he’s not going to shoot 13% or 8%. In my opinion he’s been out for a while and it took him a while to come back when he came back we were playing really well.

“It’s hard to just focus on pushing it (go) and sacrificing wins and losses at the expense of getting one player back. When you have limited minutes and limited reps, it’s hard to play a shooter.”

Oates said he hoped Welsh could catch his stroke soon with Nerma Burnett still not healthy enough to return to the lineup. Despite this, Oats has been impressed with Welch’s recent practice and hopes he shows progress during the match.

“I thought it was his best training since he came back, but I also thought he kind of lost himself in the game,” Oates said. “I played really hard. I think for good bowlers and players, when you lose yourself in the game and play hard, your instincts take over. Play hard.”
