Huawei’s latest smartwatch has a storage compartment for wireless earphones

Something small: Huawei is said to be preparing to announce a smartwatch that will act as a carrying case for a set of wireless earphones. Branded in a YouTube teaser video, the wearable combo depicts a chunky smartwatch with a screen that unfolds to reveal a pair of wireless earbuds tucked inside.

Details are light but in the video you can spot what appear to be small charging contacts in the holders that line up with the metal dots on each earbud.

The smartwatch is meant to act as a charging case for the buds when they are not being used. The buds attach to the underside of the screen with magnets.

Whether or not Huawei’s creation will be a hit with consumers remains to be seen as it faces some obvious challenges. The smartwatch’s battery life is already at a premium for its price and adding a power-sucking accessory like wireless earbuds will only make things worse.

While the combo may seem convenient at first glance, it actually limits the choice because it only works with the earphones the watch was designed for. What happens if I lose buds? Does Huawei sell headphones separately from the watch?

Ultimately, shoppers will have to balance convenience against aesthetics and ease of use. Simply put, how thick is too thick for a smartwatch? Other considerations such as the hardware specifications of the watch itself must also be factored in along with the price of the package.

Huawei was set to share more details about the wearable during its December 2 product presentation but since then Delayed the event. No reason was given for the delay but some believe it may have something to do with Covid-related restrictions in China.

Huawei is one of five Chinese technology companies on the receiving end of a file Sales and import ban by the Federal Communications Commission. The agency said the ban on Huawei, ZTE, Hytera Communications, Hikvision and Dahua would protect the United States from unacceptable national security risks. However, even if Huawei announces Watch Buds soon, don’t expect them to appear nationwide.
