the Carolina Hurricanes got a win over Over the Minnesota Wild on Thursday, but an injury to striker Max Pacioretty overshadowed the evening.

An MRI confirmed two weeks after he returned from a devastating Achilles tendon injury, that it had ruptured again. He underwent successful surgery to repair a torn hock on 9 August, and was declared fit to play just five months later – one month ahead of schedule.

The Achilles tendon is the thickest and strongest tendon in the body, and its main function is to connect the calf muscles at the back of your leg to the heel, and is crucial in creating the strength needed to walk, run, and jump. A rupture of this tendon is usually the result of overuse, an error during stopping or starting, a serious injury to the ankle, or – as in the case of Pacioretty – a previous injury to the Achilles tendon due to its relatively high injury rate.

Pacioretty has been placed on injured reserve and there is currently no schedule for his return.

The 34-year-old, who made his season debut on January 5 next Recovering from a torn AchillesHowever, he suffered a non-contact injury with only 20 seconds remaining in the contest. He appeared to grab onto the lower right leg and had to be helped into the locker room. He was unable to put any weight on his leg, the same weight he underwent surgery the previous summer.

Hurricanes coach Rod Brind Amore was hoping for good news as Pacioretty had an MRI, but he was preparing for the worst.

“We know what kind of player he is,” said Brindmore. “We got a glimpse of him and it was exciting. He’s the kind of player we need, a guy who can put the puck in the net. I hope it’s not as bad as we think, but I’m not too optimistic at the moment.

“We’ll have to pick up the pieces and move on. That’s the nature of the game. But right now, it’s hard to be very happy about winning when you know what’s probably going on here.”

Pacioretty’s teammates were stunned to see the 15-year-old veteran back down, and especially to learn what an intense rehabilitation process it was to get back on the ice.

“It definitely got in the way of winning a little bit,” Defenseman said Brady Skegee Reporters after the match. “After seeing how much work he had done at this point, we’re thinking about him now. It was really hard to see.”

Carolina captured Pacioretty from The Golden Knights In July in a move to save costs in Vegas. He is in the final season of a four-year, $7 million contract. The 2020 All-Star scored three goals in five games for the Hurricanes in 2022-23.
