Choosing a gaming monitor is often a compromise. Huge, high-resolution Ultra HD displays provide the best picture quality and immersion, but lack the fast refresh rates of smaller, lower-resolution displays. But the Preview from AUO It shows that things can change very soon.

AU Optronics, better known as AUO, is a display board supplier based in Taiwan. It showcased several new panels at Touch Taiwan 2023 International Display, including a 49-inch 5K ultra-wide curved unit with a 32:9 aspect ratio. Despite the size and resolution of this beast, it has a 360Hz refresh rate. Crazy!

Other specifications include a 5000:1 contrast ratio, 95% DCI P3 color coverage, and a maximum brightness of 600 nits. This is a VA panel, although AUO does not specify response time.

We suspect that this display board will appear in any product until 2024 or 2025. These products will be very expensive. The AUO announcement is notable because it shows that ultra-high-definition, high-resolution, high-resolution refresh rate monitors are nearby. And when it becomes somewhat popular (perhaps by the end of the decade), prices will drop dramatically.

If you can’t wait to buy an ultra-thin monitor with a high refresh rate, there’s always one Samsung Odyssey Neo G9. It matches most of the specifications of this AUO monitor panel, though its refresh rate stops at 240Hz. Realistically, most people can’t tell the difference between 360Hz and 240Hz, and you need a very powerful GPU to hit 360Hz. Therefore, Samsung monitor is a good choice.
