It appears Browns QB Deshaun Watson is done discussing his sexual assault allegations. Likely forever

For some time now, part of the difficulty facing Cleveland Brownsfuture with Deshaun Watson It was as obvious as it was inconsistent.

Speaking, things don’t get better.

Instead, it will become a different kind of show. One showcases Watson’s struggle to navigate unwritten questions about Allegations of sexual assault and misconduct suing it. It was meanders and makes contradictory statements about personal accountability. In the end, a relentless sentiment would emerge: Watson was creating more problems than accuracy it seemed every time he spoke into a microphone or camera.

In one moment, he was suggesting a personal need to grow, learn, and show true character. The next day, he would plead his innocence. The glue between them? Justify is believed to be a tonic cleansing of all the accusations.

Raised by women. and won’t…

Living in Houston, where a number of Watson’s accusers have confronted him – and covering the NFL, where a huge profit-making infrastructure tends to punish and protect him – the only thing I can say is this: In nearly every moment Watson had spoken before this week, waves of The tides of passion hit each other. Washing up the alleged victims, to the media covering him, to the lawyers suing his actions, to the tight-knit Watson camp that’s burrowing hard under it all — and finally, to the NFL organization and the Browns, each just trying to stay above water.

That all turned into this week, when Watson was scheduled to make his first appearance in front of the media since training camp. The primary objective of the Browns and Watson was fairly clear. And whether the audience is satisfied or not, they turn the page to Football part The Cleveland DeShawn Watson Story. The only question was how to do it in the most succinct way.

Thursday, we found out: simply isolate everything but football. Collect them and build an ending to the story where there was supposed to be another beginning.

This is what happened this week, for First time since Watson arrived in Cleveland. Unlike previous meetings with the media, he refused to participate in any topics related to the civil action allegations. As it stands, Watson has settled 24 lawsuits out of court. Two have not. But those two residuals are now the starting point where Watson has created the barrier he apparently intends to use. By the alert, due to this ongoing litigation, he will not talk about past or current civil lawsuits or anything related to them.

This means that there are no questions regarding the accused and nothing about him 11 matches personal conduct suspension, not going into his league-imposed treatment as part of his reinstatement process. Nothing about the awkward comeback that awaits him in Houston on Sunday, when It is said that 10 of Watson’s accusers will watch the match from a stand. All off limits. And if there is anything else that strays in some way from the specifics of football and just football, it would be put in a rowboat and pushed out to sea, its destination unknown and likely unfulfilled.

As Watson said during the opening of the media conference Thursday: “I understand you have a lot of questions, but with my legal team and my medical team, there are only football questions that I can really address at this time.”

Availability of the media itself was extraordinary. It happened a day later than usual with Cleveland’s quarterbacks, and reporters were instructed to raise their hands and beckon rather than verbally duel to ask questions. Watson clearly knew his talking points for the “four food groups”: playing against Houston Txplaying quarterback for the Browns, running the offense, not responding to anything unrelated to football.

At one point Watson was mentioned by a reporter that last August he had said there would be a day when he would tell his “side” of the story regarding all the allegations against him. When asked when that day was, Watson gave a cogent answer.

“Who knows what the future holds,” he said. “Right now, I’m locked into being the quarterback for the Cleveland Browns.”

It is not difficult to interpret what that means in the broader context. First, it all conveyed the message that Watson had already had his last untaped question-and-answer session with the media about civil litigation. Second, he may never speak of it ever again, unless it is to a hand-picked person or dissenting attorney in a courtroom. Finally, all of this looks set to hit the road, likely to be settled out of court with his last two court cases, and then closed with a statement that he’s moving on with his life and football career.

This often happens in sports. it’s the else Playbook. Master by exploiting time and distance and letting go of everything else in Football Story. I’m not saying it’s true. I’m just saying it’s something we’ve all seen before, something we’ve criticized before, and something that continues to be malicious in the NFL.

For some – perhaps most – the result with Watson will be unsatisfying and disgusting. For others closer to the middle, that will be a relief. For his accusers, it would be empty. Unfortunately for all, it must be clarification. There will be no satisfactory solution here to cover anyone. There won’t be one. On Sunday, Watson will step onto a field again and begin his path back to football. Just like the questions he’s asking now, it only goes one way.

“Just go to the games” isn’t a statement. It’s the NFL’s steadfast, unabashed, and relentless train. Brown is stepping on board with Watson this weekend. Whether you go on the trip is now up to you.
