Looking forward: With its metaverse division, Reality Labs, throwing a few more billion dollars into the oven last quarter, the company has been putting pressure on its VR products. These include the following Meta Quest headphones, which are set to succeed the popular Meta Quest 2 when it launches later this year.

Meta Q4 2022 Earnings Call included New information about the company’s upcoming VR headset. Possibly dubbed Meta Quest 3, Meta wants the device to be a relatively accessible vehicle for mixed reality aspirations.

Company CEO Mark Zuckerberg has confirmed that Quest 3 will integrate Meta Reality, the company’s technology that makes VR headsets capable of augmented reality, making them a mixed reality headset. $1,500 Meta Quest Pro, Meta Launched Last October, it includes it as a standard feature.

When Meta debuted on Quest Pro, Zuckerberg Certain The company is aiming to release Quest 3 in late 2023, with a price tag of between $300 and $500. Meta is currently offering Quest 2 at $400, which gives it a significant price advantage over offerings from companies like HTC and Valve that cost more than a dollar. Keeping Quest 3 at a similar cost could expand Meta Reality’s reach.

Leaked from last September Suggestion The Quest 3 features a depth sensor, two black and white cameras, and two RGB cameras, which are supposed to display the user’s surroundings and offer an augmented reality experience. The Quest 2’s external cameras transmit only a rudimentary black-and-white video feed. The leak also mentioned a Snapdragon SoC, two LCD displays, thin pancake lenses, mechanical IPD adjustments, a pogo pin connector for a charging dock, and a strap similar to the Quest 2.

Curiously, the Quest 3 won’t include eye tracking, a feature that VR-space competitor Sony touted in its $500 PlayStation VR headset 2. Eye tracking allows dual displays to accurately detect where a user is looking and use that information to prioritize pixel rendering, thus saving precious graphics processing cycles.

Zuckerberg expressed optimism that Meta Reality will grow in the coming years. That sentiment reflects his insistence that VR and Metaverse are a worthwhile long-term investment, even beyond his company’s Metaverse division Lost 14 billion dollars in 2022. Meta expects to lose more money in 2023 as it continues to push its ambitions.
