Tottenham full back Matt Doherty insists he is not frustrated by the lack of opportunities so far this season and understands why Antonio Conte has left him on the bench for most of the season.
Doherty struggled to establish himself at Tottenham in his first two seasons after moving from Wolverhampton. But he eventually had a string of matches under Conte from February onwards until an injury in April ended his season early.
This knee ligament tear also appears to have prompted Conte to keep Doherty behind in the early weeks of 2022/23. The Republic of Ireland international was given just four minutes in the Premier League, and Emerson Royal was favored as a starter instead.
“I’m not discouraged. I understand where the manager came from where he thought my fitness was and he was right at the end of the day,” Doherty told Irish Mirror.
“I know he trusts me, and I know that once I’m back again, he knows what I can do for him. Once he thinks I’m available, I’m sure he’ll give me more time.”
Tottenham He is still undefeated in the Premier League so far this season and occupies the same number of points with defending champions Manchester City, just one point behind leaders Arsenal.
They started well in the Champions League with a win over Marseille but then suffered their only defeat of the season in all competitions so far against Sporting CP in the second round of the final round.
