Mauricio Pochettino opens up about Kylian Mbappe’s proposed move to Real Madrid

Mauricio Pochettino has discussed Kylian Mbappe’s failed move to Real Madrid and how it could affect his developing personality.

Pochettino coached Mbappe for 18 months while he was in charge of Paris Saint-Germain and was tasked with dealing with some of football’s biggest stars and personalities.

When speaking about the time he spent mentoring such stars as Lionel Messi and Neymar, Pochettino was blunt in his assessment of Mbappe.

He said, “Mbappe is younger (than Neymar and Lionel Messi) and is still immature.” Gazzetta dello SportHe is an animal; he has great charisma but he still needs to find himself.

“Leo and Nai are complete players, and they are more responsible despite their differences, while Kylian continues to look out for himself.”

Pochettino continued, discussing the “maturity” that Mbappe has yet to discover other players around him, saying: “We will see how this process will be affected by what has happened in recent months, with the failure of his transfer to Real Madrid.”

Mbappe has been the subject of the summer’s biggest transfer saga, after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired amid a potential move to Real Madrid that seemed to be OK. However, he sensationally turned his back on a move to the Santiago Bernabéu to sign a new contract in Paris – one of the biggest in the history of the sport.

“It is difficult for him to distinguish between moments of the game when he should take risks and when he should not,” the Argentine coach explained.

“He doesn’t enjoy teaming up with his teammates unless he’s in the defensive third of the field, because he needs space to make the most of his strengths.”
