Michigan football player Matt Weiss is reportedly under investigation for computer crime at Schembechler Hall


Michigan Football Joint Attack Coordinator Matt Weiss is under investigation by UM Police for a possible computer crime, According to ESPN.

A spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Athletics confirmed to the Free Press on Tuesday night that Weiss has been placed on administrative leave. It is unclear if it was paid or unpaid leave.

The Police Department confirmed to ESPN that it is investigating a possible crime that occurred at Schembechler Hall, but did not specifically name Weiss as a suspect.

Free Press contacted the police department, but requests for comment were not responded to.

A spokesperson for the Michigan athletic department told ESPN that Weiss, who has been on the UM football team for the past two years, has not been at Schembechler Hall in recent days.

Weiss issued a statement to ESPN: “I am aware of the ongoing investigation by the University of Michigan Police Department and I am cooperating fully with the investigators. I look forward to resolving this matter. Out of respect for the integrity of the investigation, I will. I have no further comment.”

39 years old Weiss was promoted from quarterbacks coach to co-offensive coordinator, along with Sherwin Moore, in the last season after the departure of Josh Gatiss to Miami (Florida). In his last two seasons, Michigan has gone 25-3, winning back-to-back Big Ten championships and making two trips to the College Football Playoff.

Weiss’s boss, Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, announced Monday that he will not pursue coaching jobs in the NFL and return to UM for his ninth season at the helm. Weiss was named in 2021 from the Baltimore Ravens’ coaching staff, under the direction of Harbaugh’s brotherJohn, has served as a coach for many different combinations of positions over the course of his 12 years there. Weiss became involved in college coaching as a graduate assistant at Stanford University in 2005 and spent four seasons there, the last two under Jim Harbaugh.

Earlier this month, Michigan Athletic Director Ward Manuel confirmed that the department had received a draft notice of allegations from the NCAA “regarding the football program.” A source told Free Press that the violations were from the second level against the recruitment and training program for violations, and the first level against Harbou for lying or misleading the commission’s investigators.
