Michigan-Ohio State rivalry: CFP expansion could shrink something great

It will never be the same after this. Well, that’s the way of the world. People don’t always get what they want, but they do get what they pay for, and there is enough economic demand for an expanded college football game to be successful.

By 2024, the CFP will have 12 teams. This means that if undefeated Ohio State plays undefeated Michigan, as it does on Saturday, the winner takes very little. For most of the 20th century, these types of encounters were the sport’s best drama, and the stakes were enormous and clearly defined. The conference championship games and the four-team playoff have loosened up a bit. But when the CFP moves to 12 teams, 11–0 Michigan and 11–0 Ohio State will really just be chaperones for each other for a spot in line.
