Soft peas are very much like what they sound like. If you haven’t tried it before, this is a must!
I first had mushy peas when I finished a summer term as an exchange student in London (in college). I hope this sounds pretty cultured because I love making them alongside frozen fish sticks and French fries. Very cultured, really.
This mushy pea recipe pairs well with fried fish and chips, or it can be served alongside many other main dishes when you need something simple (and green) to brighten up your meal.
Peas are a great source of vegetable protein and fiber. This recipe is really easy to make, requires only a few ingredients, and tastes bright and delicious—much like This is pea soup this is what I love.

ingredients:
- Peas – I use frozen peas
- garlic
- ghee
- Cream – half and half or even whole milk
- Salt and Pepper
- Lemon

How to make mushy peas:
In a saucepan, heat the butter over medium heat. Cook minced garlic for 1 minute, until fragrant. Then mix in frozen peas. cook until done. Season everything with a little salt and pepper.
In a food processor, puree the mixture of cooked peas with the cream. The mixture will still be very thick. Now add the crushed lemon juice. Taste it and add more salt and pepper as needed.
If you would like the mushy peas to be thinner in consistency, you can add a little cream or even a little water and puree before serving.

Tips and substitutions:
- If you want this dish to be non-vegan or vegan, simply substitute the butter and cream for a non-dairy version (such as vegan butter, olive oil, oat milk, or even just water).
- This is an accessible version of mushy peas. If you want a more traditional option, you’ll want to soak dried peas overnight before cooking. Traditional mushy peas also require baking soda to be added to the boiled peas, causing them to expand and explode. But this version can be made in about 5 minutes, and frozen peas are more accessible where I live.
- If you don’t have a food processor, you can also puree it in a blender or with an immersion blender. The peas will be very tender so you can do this by hand with a spoon or masher.
