San Diego Padres slugger Manny Machado He was placed on the 10-day injured list on Friday due to a hairline fracture in his left hand.
Machado was injured Monday night. The move was retroactive to Tuesday, and manager Bob Melvin said there was a possibility Machado could return when the Padres play in the NFL. New York Yankees next weekend.
“Things are getting better, but we have a day off coming up, we didn’t feel he could play this weekend, we could hold him back three, so he can go back to New York,” said Melvin. Before the Padres opened the series against Boston Red Sox. “It’s not something you want to push on top of that. He’s a guy who can play with pain; we saw that last year. We just want to get on with this thing and hopefully it’s 100% when we get to New York.”
Like the rest of the star-studded Padres lineup, Machado struggles, hitting just . 231 with five homers and 19 RBI. He’s been an All-Star in each of the past two seasons and was runner-up in last year’s NL MVP voting.
The Padres called up an outfielder/outfielder Brandon Dixon From Triple-A El Paso.
The Padres have lost nine of 11 to fumble in fourth place in the NL West, 7 1/2 games behind Los Angeles Dodgers. San Diego entered this season with World Series expectations after reaching the NL Championship Series last year.
The Padres also put up a right hander Seth Lugo at 15 days IL with a right calf strain and left hand call Ryan Withers from El Paso.
