Chelsea cruised to a narrow 1-0 victory over Lyon in the first leg of the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final at the Groupama Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Blues will now take that narrow aggregate lead into the second leg next week at Kingsmeadow, making them favorites to reach the quarter-finals of the competition.

The amazing Guru Ritten scored the only goal of the game in the first half, slamming a delicious first-time shot past Christian Endler with her weaker right foot after being kicked in by the returning Erin Cuthbert.

Lauren James almost scored a stunning second for Chelsea just before half-time, running the ball down the right and unleashing a speculative left-footed strike that hit the far post and bounced wide.

Sam Kerr didn’t see much of the ball over the course of 90 minutes, but perhaps she thought she could have done better with a good chance early on the second she missed the target.

Lyon saw more of the ball and shot more in total. Frustratingly for home fans, however, the eight-time winners and reigning champions lacked the sophisticated quality to break down a resilient Chelsea backline that included Kadisha Buchanan against her former club.

Delphine Cascarino hit the post early in the second half and there was a late build-up of pressure in the closing stages, but the equalizer never came.

The only blot on an otherwise derby night for Chelsea was the loss of Millie Bright to injury in the first half.
