Rachel is no stranger to a busy, on-the-go lifestyle. Before becoming a chef, she spent a decade in New York City and Los Angeles, working with major beauty and media brands and also earning a master’s degree. What is golden milk? Can you share a bit of her history?
Over 5,000 years ago, Ayurveda was established as the original holistic approach to health. Known as the “sister science” of yoga, the indigenous sages outlined Ayurvedic principles that use food, herbs, and lifestyle to target the root cause of disease. It was the first preventative approach and has been a source for other holistic medicine, including traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Modern medicine takes a different approach with a focus on treating or curing a health problem, often with prescription medications and surgery.
Ayurveda was the primary medical system in India until colonialism in the 1880s, when the British banned Ayurvedic doctors from practicing it. Indian women have kept Ayurvedic traditions alive in the kitchen, deliberately using spice blends (masala) to keep their families healthy. These healing recipes have been passed down for generations in the form of kechari, curry, and haldi dudh (also known as golden milk).
Haldi doodh is the traditional Indian name for the Ayurvedic remedy (haldi = turmeric, doodh = milk). But whatever you call it, the goal is to make turmeric as tasty as possible so that you can enjoy it more. Both the fresh and powdered root are used in Ayurveda, and this drink is usually served as an effective remedy for colds, flu, digestion, and postpartum recovery. Recently, science has proven that turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory and, when taken regularly, can improve heart health, prevent Alzheimer’s disease and cancer, and help improve symptoms of depression and arthritis.
What are the health benefits of golden milk?
The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, which has been shown to help:

- Improve digestion

What does golden milk taste like?
The taste of golden milk is similar to chai, but it is more earthy than spicy. Chai is black tea mixed with spices such as ginger and/or cloves. Golden milk contains ginger, but it’s more subtle.
What type of milk is best to use in golden milk?
Dairy milk is difficult to digest for many people, so I always recommend a dairy-free alternative. The original Fronx She’s an all-time favorite – a simple blend of almonds, cashews, dates, and sea salt. I also love the creaminess of coconut and oat milk.
What spices and flavors are commonly found in golden milk?
Turmeric is the main ingredient along with other warming spices like ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, and black pepper, always! The pepper activates the turmeric to make it more bioavailable. Without black pepper, you would miss out on many of the benefits of turmeric.
What should we look for when buying turmeric?
Researching sources is the most important thing when buying turmeric. You should place the same level of intent on your spice as you do your nutritional supplements, superfoods, and skincare. We source Turmeric from Lakkadong Diaspora Company, whose mission is to build a better spice business. This heirloom variety contains 9.2% of the active curcumin! Turmeric bragrate is about 5% and has a much milder flavour.
Most of the turmeric you find in the grocery store has been steam-processed so that it can sit on shelves for months (and sometimes years!). Not only does this create a pleasant flavour, but it reduces the active curcumin to less than 2%. The past two years have also exposed how Indian farmers are being exploited and not being paid fairly.
