Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse Takes Twitter Spat With VC Over XRP
- CEO Brad Garlinghouse has become embroiled in an online spat with venture capitalist Jason Calacanis.
- “It would cost the Ripple a little bit if they signed him up as collateral and played by the rules,” Calacanis said.
- Garlinghouse responded to Calacanis by saying he was “trolling” about things he didn’t know about.
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse got into an online spat with Jason Calacanis, an angel investor and podcaster. The two got into a heated argument on Twitter after Calacanis declared that XRP was clearly a security.
Remind me of when you learned about securities law?! This is embarrassing for you (which is hilariously wrong because there is no framework for registering digital assets in the US), but we’re all so used to making controversial statements and trolling about things you know nothing about…

“It would have cost Ripple very little if they had signed him up as collateral and played by the rules — like everyone else in the industry does all day,” Calacanis said in a tweet earlier yesterday. Garlinghouse responded to the controversial tweet by asking when he learned of the securities laws, and the Ripple CEO added:
This is embarrassing for you (which is hilariously wrong because there is no framework for registering digital assets in the US), but we’re all so used to making controversial statements and trolling about things you know nothing about.
However, Kalkanis did not back down. The podcast replied, “I learned securities law by investing in 350 startups, being a public group, and forming the largest angel syndicate in the world (with 11,000 accredited investors thesyndicate.com)”. He also added that he had read the SEC court documents against Ripple.
However, when asked if ETH is a security, Calacanis did not respond. Users in the comments section also strongly disagreed with Calacanis’ statements. At least respect the 63-year-old judge. It’s been three years and she can’t figure it out yet, said one user.
Cryptocurrency lawyer and ripple attorney John Deaton also responded to Calacanis. “It is one thing to claim that Ripple is selling XRP as collateral. It is another to say that XRP is a security. XRP is a line of code inside the program. How do you sign up?” Where are ETH, ADA, ALGO, XLM, etc. registered?”
