The San Diego Wave made history Saturday night by smashing the singles game NWSL Record attendance for their first match at the new Snapdragon Arena.
A crowd of 32,000 fans watched as the wave raced against the NWSL Expansion Team and state competitors Angel City FC. The Portland Thorns held the previous record, when they hosted the North Carolina Courage in Providence Park in 2019 in front of 25,218 supporters.
“It’s an incredible feeling to win for our fans, and as someone who’s been in this game for 30 years, I’ve waited for this moment,” San Diego Wave coach Casey Stoney told reporters after the game. “This was a very important occasion for women’s football, and I am very happy to be a part of it.”
Saturday’s game also saw the largest audience for any professional women’s soccer match in the United States since 2001.
Prior to the new stadium, the San Diego wave was played at Torero Stadium, which has a capacity of 6000 spectators. Although fans filled out the previous site to support the team, Snapdragon Stadium allowed new San Diego Wave followers to gather.
The night paid off for the expansion team, as 17-year-old Jayden Reese Shaw scored the winning goal to extend Waves’ advance to the top of the NWSL table. With only two regular games remaining in the season, the San Diego team is expected to be the frontrunner in post-season.
