Sequoia India Surge Backs HealthTech Startup RedBrick AI With $4.6M Funding TechCrunch

AI is becoming ubiquitous in clinical diagnosis. But researchers need a lot of their initial data preparation time to train AI systems. The training process also requires hundreds of annotated medical images and thousands of hours of annotation by clinicians. The Delaware-based SaaS startup, which has an Indian subsidiary in Pune, is solving this problem with automated and semi-automated annotation tools.

RedBrick AI co-founder and CEO Shivam Sharma said the startup is helping make annotation up to 60% faster with a configurable workflow system that works with medical images such as CT scans, X-rays, MRIs and ultrasounds.

“We see ourselves building the foundational layer of AI in healthcare. In the future, we want to help teams with everything from data preparation to ridding the FDA of algorithms,” Sharma said in an interview with TechCrunch.

Founded in 2021 by former SpaceX Hyperloop engineers Sharma and Derek Lukacs (who serves as CTO), RedBrick AI offers specialized annotation tools that can be accessed through a web browser and integrated into customers’ existing data warehousing system, such as AWS and Google Cloud. Platform and Azure. For annotating complex 3D medical images, it also has semi-automated tools.

RedBrick AI also provides APIs that machine learning engineers can integrate with their cloud solutions and clinical data stores, including hospital enterprise PACS servers.

“Doctors just need to be logged into their browser, and every aspect of the workflow is automated,” Sharma said.

Once the annotations are properly placed, the images can be used to obtain a faster and more detailed diagnosis. Annotated images can also be used by surgical robots and to automate the detection of cancers.

RedBrick AI has a team of seven members and is mostly based in India, although the startup is mainly focusing on the US and Europe to market its tools. As the startup sees, 99% of the competition comes from open source tools, followed by internal competition developed by companies to meet their own requirements.

Early customer bases for RedBrick AI include German biotech startup Orbem, Canadian cancer and disease screening platform Prenuvo, Boston nonprofit hospital and physician network Mass General Brigham and Maharashtra AI platform Deeptek.

The initial all-share round also saw participation from Y Combinator and angel investors. Prior to this round, the startup was named Bean Y Combinator’s Winter 2022 Collection which was controlled by 32 Indian startups.

Sharma said RedBrick AI plans to leverage the fund to go beyond its existing customer base and reach enterprises. It also plans to hire new engineers to expand the range of specialized tools.
