Something to look forward to: Earlier this year, Sony and Honda announced a collaboration to develop several electric cars, some of which could be fully self-driving. The companies have also focused heavily on the entertainment aspect of the upcoming cars, underlining this by revealing plans to include the PS5 in select models.
At CES 2020, Sony announced a new subsidiary, Sony Mobility Inc. , which was his main focus on Produce electric car. The prototype shown was the Sony Vision-S, a four-door sedan with a top speed of about 150 mph. Details were scarce until earlier this year when Sony open A second prototype – an SUV called the Vision-S 02. The first model was retroactively renamed the Vision-S 01.
Sony and Honda recently revealed a partnership to produce electric cars, some of which may be autonomous, that will go public in 2026. The joint venture has been dubbed “Sony Honda Mobility.” It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement since Honda is already well established in the car market, and Sony is no stranger to the entertainment world.
In-car entertainment is a fairly recent trend, especially with electric vehicles. Tesla, the number one competitor to Sony and Honda, has skipped a beat when it comes to spending time in the car. Tesla owners can play classic games, watch Netflix or Hulu, or even getaoke carTherefore, Sony and Honda will have to think boldly to compete with the ever-growing functionality of Tesla’s entertainment apps.
It’s hard to think of anything more daring than installing a PlayStation 5 in a mass-produced car. Playing AAA games like God of War Ragnarök or Horizon Forbidden West on your dash is cool in theory. Of course, Sony and Honda don’t want you to play while driving, so we should only expect to see the feature in self-driving vehicles, which may take a while.
PS5 isn’t the only plan the two companies have when it comes to entertainment. In a recent interview with the Finanacial Times, Yasuhide Mizuno, CEO of Sony Honda Mobility, noted that the upcoming vehicles “cater To the entertainment and network we wish to provide. Unfortunately, Mizuno leaves the information somewhat vague, so it’s uncertain what the companies might be planning alongside a full PS5.
Sony and Honda hope these final changes will lead to buyers wanting to spend more time in their cars than they already do. It won’t be known for a while if including a full game console inside the car gives the desired results. The novelty sounds exciting in concept, but how practical will it really be?
