The Colorado Rapids recall Cole Bassett after unsuccessful loans to Feyenoord and Fortuna Sittard

Colorado Rapids have announced the recall of midfielder Cole Bassett from his loan to Dutch club Fortuna Sittard.

Bassett originally moved to the Netherlands with Feyenoord back in January but, after struggling for regular appearances, instead moved to Fortuna in August.

For the two teams combined, Bassett made 19 appearances, scoring once and giving one assist.

“We are thrilled to welcome Cole home to Colorado,” Rapids executive vice president and general manager Padraig Smith said in a club press release. “We all know what level of a player he is and, given his obvious knowledge of the club and league, we believe he can be a key contributor as we look to get back into the playoffs in 2023.”

Despite his struggles in the Netherlands, Bassett has a solid track record in the Netherlands MLS Having previously tallied 13 goals and nine assists in 75 appearances for the Rapids in all competitions. Now, he’ll look to use his talent to help propel the Rapids back over the playoff line after finishing 10th in the Western Conference in 2022.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be back home and to a club I have loved my whole life,” said Bassett. “I know we can achieve great things together next season and I can’t wait to play in front of our fans again at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.”

Although both the club and the player appear to be planning a life together in 2023, it should be noted that Feyenoord still have the option to buy Bassett under the terms of their original agreement. This option must be exercised by March.
