The Pirates are reportedly targeting QB Baker Mayfield as a possible replacement for Tom Brady

the Tampa Bay Buccaneers You continue to live after that Tom Brady, which meant they needed a new quarterback. According to Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, they are expected to target the veteran QB Baker Mayfield To fill in this spot once the free agency begins.

Mayfield and his longtime team Cleveland Browns He parted ways after the 2021 season, as the Browns traded him to the Carolina Panthers. He spent the first 12 weeks of the 2022 season with the Panthers, appearing in seven games and starting six. He only earned one of those starts and was pushed up on waivers, as he had been picked up by Los Angeles Rams. He spent the rest of the season with Los Angeles, winning just one of his four starts. Overall, the 27-year-old went 2-8 as a starter, and in the wake of a disastrous 2021, it looked like his days as a roaming backup QB were approaching very quickly.

It might be the Bucs throwing him a lifeline. Whoever Mayfield signs with will be his fourth team in three years, and he hasn’t even played near Beck Mayfield since at least that time. There may not be a lot of starting opportunities available to him. At least in Tampa, he’ll have the chance to compete against 25-year-old Kyle Trask for the job. And he will get another chance (the third) to try to rediscover his form and revive his career.

Now, does this opportunity deserve the prospect of being known as “Tom Brady’s understudy?” It’s a chance to start in the NFL, so it probably is, but with free agency opening on Wednesday, we’ll soon find out for sure.
