If the Toronto Blue Jays are in the market for a first baseman close to this season’s trade deadline, they may be able to get Canadian MLB icon Joey Votto from Cincinnati Reds.

Born in Toronto and raised in Etobicoke, Ontario, Votto was drafted by Cincinnati in 2002 and has played for just one franchise his entire career, compiling 16 seasons with the Reds. But as he prepared for his 17th major league campaign, management contemplated what life might be like without a six-star All-Star.

Speaking with former general manager and current MLB analyst Jim Bowden, Reds GM Nick Krall said he hopes Votto ends his career in the same place he started. If Cincinnati becomes a seller at the trade deadline, though, Krall could be open to a 2010 NL MVP deal to his hometown franchise if that’s Votto’s wish.

The 39-year-old Votto is entering the final season of his 10-year, $225 million contract, which includes a full no-trade clause and a $20 million club option for 2024, with a $7 million buyout.

Joining the Blue Jays would make a lot of sense from a Votto perspective, allowing him to play in a playoff game after consecutive rebuilding seasons in Cincinnati. It would also give him a chance to represent his boyhood team – something he will likely be most proud of at this point in his career.

Votto only made four visits to the Rogers Center because he played in the National League’s Central Division but has enjoyed his fair share of success there in the past, hitting .250/.340/.614 with 146 wRC+ across 12 games — including a game-winning home run. against Toronto last May.

Getting a veteran won’t be as important to the Blue Jays, especially with Brandon belt – Fellow player left – already in the list. Unless Bilt’s knee problems return or his production is poor, there likely won’t be much playing time available for an outside addition at this position.

Not to mention, Votto may not be able to offer much upside during his 39-year campaign, considering he hit .205/.319/.370 with 11 home runs, 41 RBI, and 92 wRC + over 91 last season’s match. He also missed the end of 2022 with a torn rotator cuff and left bicep injury.

However, the lure of adding a homegrown player to a list of World Series aspirations would certainly generate an enormous amount of buzz throughout the Toronto fanbase.
