Liam Hendrix‘ Back to Major League Baseball could be in sight.
the Chicago White Sox Closer, who announced back in January that he was battling non-Hodgkin lymphoma, is heading to Chicago this week and will do live batting practice on Friday after a Triple-A rehab stint, ESPN said Thursday. If Hendriks’ live batting practice session goes well, he could take part in the major tournaments shortly thereafter, according to the report.
White Sox manager Pedro Grifoll Similar news was reported on WednesdayHe told reporters that Hendrix could step up with Chicago again “early next week or next weekend.”
“Liam will show up here tomorrow or Friday, and then we’ll sit down and talk about how we move forward,” said Grifoll. “With Liam, though, it’s a day-to-day thing. There’s no plan for it.”
Grifol wants to see how Hendriks’ body reacts to a live hitting practice session before making any commitment on the pitcher’s return date.
“We’ll just sit with him, see how his body feels, see how his arm feels,” Grifoll said. “And then we’ll make adjustments to whatever we have, whatever we need to do.”
Hendriks announced that he had begun treatment for non-Hodgkins lymphoma on January 8, later revealed that it was Stage 4 cancer. After telling White Sox fans that he was on his final round of chemotherapy in the team’s April 3 home opener, Hendriks announced that he was in Remission and Cancer-Free April 20th.
Hendrix, who has been one of the best players in baseball over the past two seasons, is ready to start rolling again.
“So far I have a clean bill of health. I’m in remission now,” Hendrix told reporters on May 3.
Shortly after Hendrix was declared cancer-free, he began a rehab stint at the team’s facilities in Arizona before transferring to Triple-A Charlotte. Hendriks allowed six earned runs in five innings pitched over six appearances.
Hendriks recorded 39 tackles during a 2019 and COVID-shortened 2020 season with Oakland Athletics. He had a career-best 38 saves in his first season with the White Sox in 2021, and recorded 37 saves last season.
The Chicago Football Club struggled without Hendrix. Reinaldo Lopez He recorded four tackles in eight chances, and the team had only seven tackles in nearly a quarter during the 2023 MLB season.
