The United States and Wales clash in what appears to be an important opening for Group Two in the World Cup in Qatar.
Greg Berhalter’s young side are in their first World Cup finals since 2014 and big things are expected from Christian Pulisic, Gio Reina & Co in Qatar. After a bumpy CONCACAF qualifying cycle, there are still many doubts about this team and Berhalter, but a big World Cup this time around will set things up nicely for the 2026 World Cup on home soil. Here and now, getting off to a good start in this tournament is vital.
As for Wales and Rob Page, they have traversed a major UEFA qualifying tournament through qualifying and are in their first World Cup since 1958 and only their second tournament ever. This is the culmination of the careers of Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey as the Wales star duo are fit and ready to go. After reaching the semi-finals of the European Championship in 2016 and then the round of 16 at Euro 2020, this Welsh side has enjoyed success in recent major tournaments.

USMNT, Wales starting XI
The main events, the players have to watch closely
For the USMNT, turning their midfield will be their strength but there are still a lot of question marks around defense. Veteran Tim Ream could start at full-back to provide experience, while the midfield trio of Weston McKinney, Tyler Adams and Younes Musa are restricted as the main men in midfield. Christian Pulisic, Gio Reina, Brendan Aronson and Tim Weah are all vying for a starting spot in the offensive midfield but there’s no clear winner to start in the ninth, so perhaps the USMNT will start with the false nine?
In terms of injuries, Sergino Dest, Matt Turner and Weston McKinney have all been training after neglecting recent injuries. However, Greg Berhalter said it was unlikely that both Dest and McKinney would play the full 90 minutes and said they were completely unsuited for the opening match against Wales. It was also announced that USMNT captain Tyler Adams had been named to the tournament.
Wells likes to sit deep and soak up the pressure, and their back three and fluid system will be tough for the USMNT to break down. Moving forward, the quality of Ramsey and Bale speak for themselves and Wales will rely heavily on set-piece situations and swinging the pass in order to attack Kiefer Moore. Watch out for Harry Wilson and Daniel James in the attacking zones, too. Wales are a strong, experienced team who are very good at dropping back and then counter-attacking. Their nation expects them to get out of this group and this game against the USMNT will be very close to calling. The wise Wales looks very good with Joe Allen training on his own as he’s been recovering from a hamstring problem recently and won’t be available for this game.
