In a recent interview, Ryo Matsubara, Representative Director at Oasys spoke about blockchain gaming and the technology’s strides toward traditional video games.
While sharing his thoughts, Matsubara noted that industry leaders such as Bandai Namco, Square Enix, and SEGA, among others, have been eyeing the blockchain market.
Blockchain is the ‘new paradigm’ of gaming
speaking in Tokyo Games Show Back in 2022, Matsubara shared that industry giants such as Bandai Namco and SEGA were eyeing the blockchain space. It is claimed that companies are not interested in simply jumping on the bandwagon, but in actively working to advance the industry with a long-term vision.
"We have a shared vision about blockchain at the executive level. They don't [want to] change that policy. They really understand the future adoption of blockchain. They're not thinking about, you know, just the revenue, they want to create the next future [of gaming],” explained Matsubara.
When asked if these companies are looking to integrate blockchain into games, Matsubara confirmed that they are creating new games.
The reason for this, Matsubara said, is that blockchain represents an entirely new paradigm for gaming, and it needs time to “mature” before developers can link it to the current gaming industry.
He added, “When the model is fixed, becomes sustainable and successful, then strong [popular] IPs will be added.”
GameStop, Ubisoft, and Epic are already in Blockchain Games
newly, Blancos Block Party It became the first blockchain-based game to make its way to the Epic Games Store, while Gala Game’s perseverance It was first set at a later date. Moreover, Epic Games has consistently expressed optimism about blockchain games.
Earlier this year, GameStop finally launched its own NFT marketplace and standalone wallet, while Square Enix and Ubisoft have made investments in NFTs for some time. Ubisoft even teamed up with sand to get special Rapids Event.
Matsubara claims that SEGA, Bandai Namco, and other giants are later looking to enter the space and experiment with blockchain.
Blockchain is expected to revolutionize traditional games, and the transformation has already begun. Industry giants like Ubisoft, GameStop, SEGA, Square Enix, and others have already taken a leap of confidence, and it’s only a matter of time before more companies manipulate the blockchain and make it mainstream.
