We tried 13 brands and named this the best pancake mix

Many of my fond memories include a large stack of pancakes doused in butter and dipped in syrup to eat breakfast. My dad considers himself a pancake connoisseur, and he would mix the batter carefully, distribute the chocolate chips evenly, and flip each pancake to perfection. On the other hand, I’m known to be more free-spirited with pancakes. He caught me in the kitchen looking at the batter, peeking anxiously under the pancakes, loading each with so many blueberries turning perfectly blue. But when it comes to the ultimate breakfast of champions, there’s one thing my dad and I can agree on. And that, dear readers, is the holy grail Weekend lunch: Having the best pancake mix on hand is an absolute necessity.

So, in the name of research, i have sought to announce the best pancake mix once and for all. yes, I know that DIY pancake mix At home very easy. But when it comes to morning meals, the simpler, quicker, and more convenient, the better. It’s those criteria that make pancake mix the ultimate morning hack (and why this tasting might be one of my favorites yet).

Ranking Guidelines

Turns out, people have strong opinions about what makes the best pie. Among 12 of our taste testers, there was some commonality in what our group was looking for the perfect pancake and our title for best pancake mix.

  • flavor. We didn’t know how to describe it, but the pancakes had a certain flavour. Outside of the maple syrup that coats them, the pancakes taste…pancake-y. We were looking for a slightly sweet, slightly neutral pie that tasted just as good on its own as it did with the maple syrup. We didn’t want our pancakes to taste too savory, too light, or too dough-like.
  • texture. Our group agreed that the light, fluffy pancake was the favorite—not too dense and not too chewy. We were looking for the ultimate fluffy pancakes.
  • Ease of use. While some batter pancakes suggest a “just add water” callout, we also tested dough that called for eggs, oil, and water. Additional ingredients are noted if they make a difference to the resulting pie. For example, is measuring out the amount of milk or oil and having to scoop up an extra spoon worth it to make a better pancake?
  • Good pancake test. Are the resulting pancakes stacked well? Are they a solid base for an abundance of maple syrup? Do we consider these pancakes the ultimate breakfast?

The testing process

The process of making 13 different pies was slightly different from the previous tasting, as the pies obviously need to be fresh. The pancakes were all made the same morning, on the same baking sheet, at the same temperature. Pancakes made early in the cooking process were kept warm and all pancakes were eaten warm and at room temperature with and without maple syrup.

13. Whole Foods 365 Organic Butter Pancake and Waffle Mix

“Looks like G was having a moment, is she okay?”

“Why does this pie look like a biscuit?”

While we’re 99.9% sure we followed the directions for this mix correctly, this pie clearly looks like the farthest thing from pie, and instead comes out gluten-free and tasteless. We’re excluding this from the rankings simply because we don’t know how the hockey puck ended up. Excuse me.

12. Classic Birch Bender Pancakes

While the texture in this was fine if not a bit chewy, we weren’t a huge fan of the flavor. There was something we couldn’t quite put our finger on compared to the others. Plus, we wanted thin AF pancakes. It was a pass for our tasters.

11. Annie’s Organic Pancake and Waffle Mix

“It looks like she hasn’t seen the sun in a while.”

These muffins didn’t pull much color while cooking on the griddle and were a little paler compared to the others. In addition, we thought the flavor was nice while the texture was a bit harsh. But when dipped in maple syrup, we didn’t mind that.

10. Elizabeth’s Old Fashioned Gluten Free Waffle Mix

“This is the definition of a healthy pie.”

In fact we loved these pancakes on their own. They have a coarser and grainier texture thanks to the seeds and grains of the mixture. The flavor was also a bit on the savory side. Overall, this is a good health-focused option if that’s your pie priority.

NB: We tried this with an egg and without an egg for a vegan option, and the egg option was a huge favorite for the perfect texture.

9. Kodiak Cakes Buttermilk Cakes

Many of us have had Kodiak muffins before and are fans of the protein-packed breakfast option. When you mix with the other mixes, you can definitely taste the difference that whole wheat flour makes. As a result, testers noted this tasted “healthy.” The flavor isn’t bad, just one note. We’ll always have some Kodiak muffins on hand to pair with peanut butter and berries for a hearty breakfast, but they just didn’t tick the box for the ultimate fluffy pancake.

NB: We also found with this mixture that using an egg made it Many Fluffy, and we will add an egg to this mixture in the future when cooking.

8. Pearl Mills Company, curd, whole pancake mix

A classic pie many of us grew up with. The texture was very smooth and fluffy, but we rated this in the middle with the flavor slanting a bit. However, with some salted butter and plenty of maple syrup, we’ll be on board.

7. The Original Bisquick Pancake and Baking Mix

“This tastes like pancake.” This sums it up.

6. King Arthur buttermilk pancake mix

Although these pancakes didn’t pick up much color and we wondered if we should cook them longer next time, they did have a soft, fluffy texture. Tasters noted that these waffles had a slight maple undertone, too. Overall, we liked it but would have cooked it at a higher temperature to get a bit more color.

5. Simple Mills Almond Flour & Waffle Mix, The Original – Gluten Free

“You’re telling me this is gluten-free? Like, there is no gluten in this?”

“I’m amazed how healthy this pie is.”

Simple Mills fell asleep with our taste-test group. I’ll admit, i was shocked that a pancake mix marketed with health could taste as good as this one. The texture was very smooth, though we wished it would have firmed up a bit. The flavor tasted a bit next to soggy, but it was good enough that we didn’t mind. Really, if we didn’t know, we might not have guessed that it was gluten-free.

4. Gluten-free King Arthur pancake mix

Another surprising gluten-free hit. Having tasted this over and over again with King Arthur’s regular buttermilk pancake mix, we were surprised to be impressed by the gluten-free mix. We really couldn’t tell one was gluten free over the other. These pancakes had a nice little bounce and the texture kept us coming back although some noted the pancake on its own was little bit Less tasty than its curd counterpart. On the whole, we were impressed.

3. Bob’s Red Mill Buttermilk Pancake and Waffle Mix

“Does this really taste pie?”

Bob created a slightly neutral but flavourful pie. If you get it, you get it. The texture was smooth and fluffy and heightened well for a drizzle of maple syrup. We were big fans and ended up stacking these pancakes.

2. Krusteaz buttermilk pancake mix

“Straight fire.”

“Give me a pillow of these pancakes.”

These classic Krusteaz pancakes were so soft and fluffy, the maple syrup soaked into our dishes perfectly without falling apart. The texture and flavor kept us coming back for more. Yes, this ticked a lot of our boxes.

1. Hungry Milk Pancake Mix and Waffle Mix

“FLUFF.” Lightness. unbelievable.”

*chef’s kiss* Yes, the winner for best store-bought pancake mix goes to Hungry Jack. This was the epitome of a fluffy dinner pie that was incredibly light with the perfect pancake flavor. We finished our stack and immediately made a second batch. The new tasters at Hungry Jack are now officially converted. Expect to see more Hungry Jack’s pies on our brunch menus.
