When is Casemiro available to Manchester United after being suspended?

Wednesday evening went downhill to fast Manchester United and their fans in a very short period of time.

Erik ten Hag’s side were 1-0 away from home against Crystal Palace and appeared to be on their way to a 10th successive win, something the club had not done since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

Not only did getting the three points keep the pressure on Arsenal and Manchester City vital, United also wanted to make sure they didn’t see Casemiro picked up as that would result in the game against Arsenal being suspended at the weekend.

The overall performance from United was uninspiring, with the second half offering very few chances for either side. With about 10 minutes left to play Crystal Palace started to oblige more players forward and that took Casemiro out.

After receiving a loose pass from Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro was forced to fetch a runner heading towards the 18-yard box and the referee had no choice but to hand out a yellow card. Arguably the tackle was closer to the red than the yellow and Casemiro didn’t protest at all.

This is the Brazilian’s fifth yellow card this season in the Premier League, which means he is suspended for the match against league leaders Arsenal on Sunday. Arsenal could go 11 points clear of United with a game in hand if they win at the Emirates.

They could only have gone nine points ahead had it not been for a stunning Michael Ulis free-kick in the 91st minute of the game at Selhurst Park to make it 1-1. It’s probably January’s Goal of the Month and could be a contender for Goal of the Season.

Tin Hag and the players looked sad as the final whistle blew.

Missing the Arsenal game is a huge blow for Casemiro but, as Ten Hag pointed out after the game, United beat Arsenal without Casemiro earlier in the season and now they have to do it again. That game finished 3-1 at Old Trafford but Arsenal looked threatening for the most part.

“He’s a really important player for us and he’s the reason we’re in this position,” Ten Hag said. BBC Sport. “But last time we beat Arsenal without Casemiro. We need to do it again. We win, we control the game and an unlucky moment. We don’t have time to react. We have to take that, move on and create the best plan for Arsenal.”

It will be a while before United fans get to see Casemiro in the Premier League again because the game is after Arsenal’s elimination from Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup semi-finals. This is followed by the fourth round match of the FA Cup with Reading.

February starts with the return leg against Forest at Old Trafford, so Casemiro’s next Premier League game is against – get this – Crystal Palace on February 4.

Fred or Scott McTominay should replace Casemiro against Arsenal. However, neither of them would be able to perform at their level. He has played 76% of United’s minutes in the Premier League this season and has been the definition of consistency.
